Australia and China to Work together for Better Environment and Health Outcomes
I am pleased to announce that Australia will provide $51 million over the next five years for environment and health programs in China.
We will contribute $25 million to the Australia-China Environment Development
Program to support China’s policies for a better environment with an initial focus on water resource management.
A further $25 million will fund the Australia-China Health and HIV/AIDS Program, to support China’s ongoing efforts to halt and reverse the spread of HIV, protect its population against emerging infectious diseases and strengthen its health systems.
We will also contribute $1 million over the next five years to support the work of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). The CCICED is a high level international environment advisory board to the Government of China.
I have nominated Mr Roger Beale, former Secretary of the Department of Environment and Heritage, to sit on this important council, which provides policy recommendations to the Government of China on key environmental issues
These major new programs will further strengthen linkages and engagement between Australian and Chinese institutions to address key environmental and health issues of mutual concern.
