Cultural Activities in December

“Guangdong residents with an interest in Australia will have a unique opportunity to experience Australia first-hand through an exciting program of events over the next month,” the Australian Consul-General in Guangzhou, Mr Sean Kelly, said today. “In conjunction with a range of local partners, we are delighted to announce a series of Australia-linked events including art and photographic exhibitions, theatre, music and dance performances, Australian consumer products promotions, and sporting exchanges.”

The program of events includes:

• eight Australian films being showcased in the Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival, held at the Holiday Inn Hotel from 4 to 10 December

• an exhibition of indigenous Australian Torres Strait Islander art works entitled “Dugong My Son” at the Guangdong Museum of Arts from 6 to 23 December;

• the 3rd annual Australian Lifestyle Expo, focused particularly on Australian wine culture and health and well-being products, which will be held at the Dong Fang Hotel from 7 to 9 December (open to the public from midday on 8 December);

• performances across Guangzhou by the Baiwa Torres Strait Islander Dance Company to coincide with the art exhibition and other events during the first part of December (generously sponsored by the Kingold Group);

• a performance by a quartet from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with the Guangzhou Symphony at the Xinghai Concert Hall on 8 December;

• an Australian Cultural Festival at Sun Yat-sen University from 11 to 13 December, featuring a large exhibition of Australian landscape photography;

• a visit by top Australian sprinter and Beijing Olympic medal hopeful Patrick Johnson as a Sporting Ambassador on 12 to 15 December;

• and performances of an Australian production of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical “Cats” at the Tianhe Sports Stadium from 5 to 10 January 2008.
