VACANCIES

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) section of the Australian Consulate-General Guangzhou has vacancies for locally engaged staff to fill the following positions:

Public Diplomacy, Alumni and Visits Officer (Level 4)

Research Officer (Level 4)

These are permanent positions. Salary for these positions will commence at RMB 9,833 (LE 4) per month.

Applications are invited from Chinese Nationals only. Successful applicant is required to register with the Service Office of Foreign Establishments, Guangdong Province (if not already) prior to commencing employment. 

A duty statement and selection criteria for the positions are attached. Your application, written in English, must include:

  • a short statement of claims which explains how you meet the selection criteria for the position/s (1 page maximum);
  • curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum); and
  • contact details of two work-related referees.

Referees should be from two different employers, where possible. Referees must also have been supervisors or managers, not peers. When providing referee details, please indicate whether the referee can speak fluent English, and ensure that:

  • contact details are up-to-date and include both email and phone numbers; and
  • the referee knows you have applied for the position.

Public Diplomacy, Alumni and Visits Officer

JOB DESCRIPTION

Key responsibilities of the Public Diplomacy, Alumni and Visits Officer position include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in developing and implementing the Consulate-General’s public diplomacy and alumni engagement strategies
  • Monitor post’s public diplomacy and alumni engagement budgets
  • Plan and deliver public diplomacy and alumni engagement events and functions
  • Draft reports and talking points on public diplomacy and alumni strategies and events
  • Build and maintain a broad network of contacts relevant to public diplomacy and alumni activities in South China, including in local media, universities, government institutions, and visual and performing arts centres
  • Build and maintain relationships with Australian cultural and educational institutions
  • Develop and maintain links with Australian alumni in South China
  • Prepare media releases, write speeches, manage and coordinate appropriate media relations activities
  • Support Government Relations Manager with logistical assistance during ministerial and other high-level visits, including preparation of visit programs, accommodation and transport arrangements, airport facilitation, and meeting requests.
  • Manage post’s biographical database on major government officials
  • Interpret and translate between Chinese and English, as requested
  • Research and assist in developing post’s social media policy and maintain and update post’s website, in consultation with Canberra and other China posts

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Strong organisation and time management skills. Ability to multi-task and reprioritise in response to changing requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop a broad network of relevant contacts
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills with a sufficient level of interpreting skills. Fluent in written and spoken English and Chinese.
  • Previous experience working in media or public affairs or qualifications in these fields would be an advantage.

 

Research Officer

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Research Officer is responsible for undertaking a range of political and economic research and reporting activities, including media monitoring. 

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct  political and economic research and analysis
  • Prepare reports, including draft cables, and briefings based on the research and analysis
  • Coordinate meetings for Australian officials and undertake relevant follow up
  • Provide assistance and liaison for ministerial and high-level visits
  • Interpret and translate between Chinese and English, as requested
  • Provide note taking duties and prepare records of conversations of meetings
  • Monitor Chinese media and publications, and distribute translations and summaries of relevant articles

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Strong organisation and time management skills. Ability to multi-task and reprioritise in response to changing requirements.
  • Previous experience working in a research environment, particularly political/economics/social sciences fields, would be an advantage
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop a broad network of relevant contacts
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Chinese.
